My son entered Dixie Montessori Academy as a 2nd grader. He went to public school for kindergarten, then homeschool for first grade. He has always struggled with reading. It got to the point to where he absolutely hated reading. Any reading sessions would often end in tears. I was at a loss about what to do. It made me sad to see my son struggle so much.
I knew that homeschooling would not work for us, so I looked into other options. I didn’t want to return him to public school. I wanted him to have a more intimate experience, with teachers who cared about him almost as much as I do. I stumbled across Montessori. I had heard the name, but didn’t know too much about it. I really liked what I read. The thing that really resonated with me was that Montessori is child-centered learning. It isn’t about where the child “should” be academically, it is about where he is naturally. It isn’t about putting all 2nd graders in a box and saying “these are the words he should know right now, and if he doesn’t, something is wrong”. So I enrolled him.
It has now been almost two years and I am happy to say he is a reader! He actually enjoys it. His teachers have taught him with love. They have followed his cues and he learned how to read in his own time. That makes me so happy, and better yet, he is happy.
